The long wait is finally over and the New England Patriots have their quarterback of the future. With the third-overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots selected Drake Maye out of North Carolina.

Patriots fans are certainly excited about the prospect of having a new signal-caller at the helm after the Mac Jones experiment failed miserably. Maye will try to lead New England to the new post-Bill Belichick era under the new head coach Jerod Mayo.

The Maye selection may have kickstarted the post-Belichick era but that doesn't mean that the iconic head coach isn't going to make his opinion heard about the 21-year-old.

Bill Belichick Already Criticizing Patriots' No. 3 Selection Drake Maye

The former Patriots head coach evaluated Maye in pre-draft coverage on the Pat McAfee Show. Criticizing the young star, Belichick says Maye's footwork "needs a lot of work".

Obviously, we are not going to sit here and say that Belichick doesn't know what he is talking about. Like every rookie quarterback, Maye will have his struggles. He needs to improve to establish himself as a quality quarterback in the league.

However, already bashing Maye before he enters the league is unnecessary. If it's that easy to rip apart a 21-year-old quarterback prospect already, why didn't Belichick see the warning signs on Mac Jones?

He either didn't see the issues with Mac Jones when he drafted him with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, or couldn't develop him right under his wing. Either way, it raises some questions about Belichick.

Regardless of what the legendary coach is saying about the new Patriots quarterback, there is a new face of the franchise in Foxborough and New England fans should be excited to have him.
