What the Boston Bruins' Opening Night Lineup Should Look Like
Defensive Pairing #3: Derek Forbort — Kevin Shattenkirk
Derek Forbort was a liability in the playoffs, but he's still on the roster and will likely see opening-night action. He's fine if his minutes are sheltered and is a solid penalty kill contributor when he's on his game, but any more responsibility than that could lead to issues.
While many Bruins fans (myself included) want to see rookie defenseman Mason Lohrei on Wednesday, Kevin Shattenkirk likely plays on the third pairing's right side. Lohrei probably begins the season in the minors due to his ability to be called up at any point in the campaign.
Shattenkirk's play has declined over the last few years, but he was also playing with the Anaheim Ducks. Hopefully, joining the Bruins helps rejuvenate his play because his offense would come in handy on the third pairing.
Starting Goaltender: Linus Ullmark, Backup Goaltender: Jeremy Swayman
As the reigning Vezina Trophy winner, there's no way Linus Ullmark isn't the Bruins' starting goalie against the Blackhawks. The 30-year-old Swedish netminder went 40-6-1 with a 1.89 goals-against average, .938 save percentage, and two shutouts in 49 appearances last year.
Jeremy Swayman is the other half of one of the best goaltending tandems today. The ex-Maine product looks to further solidify himself as a starting goaltender after a 24-6-4 record, 2.27 GAA, .920 SV%, and four shutouts across 37 appearances.
