Recent Patriots First-Round Pick on the Roster Bubble Ahead of OTAs

NFL coaches and GMs never stop. Roster churn happens all year as teams look to gain an edge in the upcoming game or season, or simply take a look at upcoming talent. That often spells trouble for veterans.

The Patriots made a firm commitment to build around Drake Maye after a promising first year. The additions of veteran WR Stefon Diggs, C Garrett Bradbury, and OT Morgan Moses all bring experience and savvy to the locker room. The NFL Draft doubled down on the commitment to Maye, bringing in rookie OT Will Campbell, RB TreVeyon Henderson, WR Kyle Williams, and C Jared Wilson.

Notice anything? The Patriots double-dipped at the interior lineman space. Both Bradbury and Wilson are listed on the depth chart as centers. However, strangely enough, so is G/C Cole Strange. While ESPN's depth chart is certainly unofficial and this is very early, it does indicate how the former first-round pick is viewed by the organization.

Cole Strange is Firmly on the Roster Bubble Ahead of the OTAs

The biggest news surrounding Strange is that his fifth-year option wasn't picked up by the team. Using hindsight, this may not be shocking as Strange was seen as a significant reach when he was drafted. While his performance in his first few years was solid, it didn't scream O-Line anchor for the next decade.

Making matters worse for Strange, the Patriots already employ a highly paid guard in Michael Onwenu. Onwenu primarily works in the interior space, and if everyone is healthy, will likely stay there. He provides flexibility to kick out to tackle if needed, something Strange does not.

The other guard spot is held by Layden Robinson. The 2024 fourth-rounder was highly regarded and received consideration for the NFL's All-Rookie team from some outlets. Robinson is signed through the 2027-28 season before the Patriots have to decide whether to pay him.

It likely looks like Bradbury or Wilson taking the bulk of snaps at center, with the other acting as a swing lineman or kicking out to guard potentially. Robinson and Onwenu should act as the guards unless Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels choose to utilize Wilson or Bradbury there. This means already looking at four people for three spots.

Strange could be a backup, though. Not necessarily, the Patriots signed Wes Schweitzer this offseason. While both older and somewhat injury-prone, the Patriots have a young roster, and Schweitzer could offer guidance and mentorship. On the flip side, another potential backup in Sidy Sow is younger and cheaper than Strange.

Most rosters run "two-deep" at offensive line positions; the Patriots are fortunate to have seven options on their roster. That means someone currently on the roster will be left without a spot. Considering the team was unwilling to make the future commitment, invested heavily in upgrades this season at the interior line positions, and has younger options on the roster, it is safe to say, Cole Strange is on the bubble.
