The Boston Red Sox gave up a lot to acquire three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman ahead of this year's trade deadline, and they now need to do whatever they can to ensure he sticks around for the long haul.
Rutschman is under contract through the 2027 season and is eligible for a new deal. Given the fact that Boston gave up some of its top prospects for him and the fact that he's going to be an integral part of their success moving forward, the team needs to do whatever it can to make sure that the 28-year-old is more than just a rental.
Adley Rutschman should be a great fit in Boston
It's not a stretch to say that, on paper, Rutschman is the best catcher the Red Sox have had since Jason Varitek. He may not have turned into what everybody thought he was going to be when he was the top-ranked prospect in baseball before his 2022 debut, but he's still a fantastic catcher who will greatly bolster the Red Sox' roster.
The Oregon native is an elite defensive catcher with a bat that should give the Red Sox' lineup some real depth. Through 67 games this season, Rutschman is hitting .251 with a .764 OPS, and he has recorded eight home runs (Boston's catchers all season have hit four home runs - an MLB-worst) and 47 RBIs.
Rutschman's presence should solve one of the Red Sox' biggest holes in the organization, and fans should be excited about what he brings to the table. They're looking to make some real noise this season and potentially compete for a World Series. Having a legitimate everyday catcher should only put them in a better position to make this happen.

He's not necessarily a young star anymore, but Rutschman is still in his 20s. He has plenty of great baseball left in him, and he should be a real asset in Boston for years to come.
Ensuring that he remains with the team for more than a season or two will provide some security at one of the Red Sox' most bleak positions. And while there are a ton of seasoned vets on the team, the Red Sox still have a pretty young roster. Rutschman fits their timeline and can help them compete for a long time.
This trade was a bit risky for Boston, but it was a risk it needed to take, especially if the team can keep Rutschman around for the long haul.
