According to Red Sox insider Jeff Passan, the Boston Red Sox are calling up top prospect Marcelo Mayer. The infielder has been ripping the cover off the ball in AAA Worcester, and now it's his time to strike! With Kristian Campbell already in the majors and doing a respectable job at second, Mayer will most likely be taking his spot while he moves somewhere around the field...presumably third base.
The Boston Red Sox are calling up infielder Marcelo Mayer, one of the top prospects in baseball, sources tell ESPN. With Alex Bregman injured, Boston needs infield help, and the 22-year-old Mayer -- who's hitting .271/.347/.471 at Triple-A -- will get the first shot at his ABs.

Unfortunately, Alex Bregman's injury is what caused all this. He suffered a right quad tightness that took him out of the game yesterday against Baltimore, and now it has gotten worse this morning. Because of this, he's getting an MRI on Saturday, as everyone will be waiting for an update.
The 22-year-old infielder has been slugging a .271 batting average, with a minor-league-leading 43 RBIs, and 9 HRs. Hopefully, this is a preview of the inevitability of Roman Anthony being called up, but let's put the brakes on for a bit. While Mayer gets the call-up, Red Sox fans may have to wait until the middle of June for the final piece of the Big 3 to be officially reunited.
Mayer will be playing Game 2 for the doubleheader, according to MassLive's Katie Morrison-O'Day. He was reportedly told so by Chad Tracy during Worcester's Game 1 of their doubleheader that he was getting called up. After he left the office, his teammates went wild and congratulated him as he was mobbed like he was at home plate after a walk-off. He started packing up and is heading down I-90 to Boston for his major league debut! The new era of Boston has officially begun!
