Red Sox’s Can’t Ignore Franklin Arias’s Stellar Play Much Longer

With the third week of the season already blowing by for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, shortstop and #2 prospect in the Boston Red Sox system, Franklin Arias, has been a highlight reel since their Opening Day.

Arias, who was signed out of Venezuela for $525,000 back in January of 2023, made his pro debut later that same season in Rookie Ball. In 2024, he played his first full minor league campaign, batting .309 with an OPS of .896, 25 doubles, nine home runs, and 35 steals. He soared through the minors in 2025, moving from Low-A Salem to High-A Greenville, before finishing the season as a call-up to Double-A.

Arias Showing His Worth to Boston with Start to Minor League Season

Now, in his 24 at-bats to start the 2026 season, Arias has made the most of every single one. He's leading all Double-A shortstops with a .542 batting average. He's only struck out twice and walked four times. He's already driven in 8 runs, along with two doubles and 13 total hits. His OPS is sitting at 1.488.

This was a player best known for his defensive prowess at shortstop; however, issues with being on top of the ball led to problems at the plate. However, this year has been his breakout, and it's a wonderful sight to see from this 20-year-old. He will be 21 in November when the season's over.

While this is something to pay attention to if you're CBO Craig Breslow, the Boston Red Sox have nowhere to put this kid. Even then, they can't just ignore his stellar play for much longer.

While it's still a few weeks into the season, if they were to call him up to Triple-A Worcester right now, they would have to make some moves around the roster. As of right now, the WooSox infield consists of Tsung-Che Cheng at his respective position, with Mikey Romero, a top prospect in his own right, playing at third. Nick Sogard is their starting second baseman, with Anthony Siegler and Vinny Capra as infield depth. Someone has to be brought up, and that will either be Nick Sogard or Mikey Romero, before Arias has the clear pathway for another promotion.

However, with the way things have been going in Boston right now, who are sitting at a mere 7-11, a roster shake-up may happen if things don't improve. Expect players traded, and expect promotions for younger prospects that the organization has the utmost faith in.

Arias is one of them, so let's hope things work in his favor...
