Red Sox Can’t Trust First Baseman in the Final Stretch of the Season

Abraham Toro is one of the depth pieces on the Boston Red Sox that they've been using as a "permanent" piece to their lineup for a few months now. It's really been so since the Triston Casas injury back in May.

Toro was batting .271, hitting five home runs, 11 doubles, with 20 RBIs, an OPS of .739, a slugging percentage of .418, and 48 hits in the first half of his major league season (52 games). But after the All-Star Break, he's only batting .191, with six RBIs, two home runs, two doubles, and only 13 hits in 21 games.

He's drifting back down to reality, and it's time to make a switch.

There are three options that the Red Sox can choose from. One of them is permanently putting Romy Gonzalez at first base, given his batting .305 in 63 games this season. Another one would be to move Masataka Yoshida, who's been taking reps at first base, over there instead. The last one would be calling up Kristian Campbell as the interim first baseman until the season is over.

Campbell, who was demoted due to bad defense and screwed up swing mechanics, has been lighting things on fire in AAA Worcester. He's hit six home runs in 27 games since the end of July, and is batting .326 in his last 43 at-bats. He's timing the breaking pitches much better than he was in the majors as well.

The ideal option would be to have either or take the position, at least for right now. Campbell will most likely be the call-up in September, and then Cora can platoon both Yoshida and Romy. How will the structure work out? That's to the eye of Cora himself. But to better the team, Toro would be the addition by subtraction.

Regardless of which option, Toro would need to be DFA'd.
