The Boston Red Sox are on a tear right now. Not only are they the hottest team in baseball (they are 29-5 since Jun. 25), but they look like legitimate World Series contenders.
And now, it looks like things could soon reach a new level for Boston.
According to interim manager Chad Tracy, Garrett Crochet (out since Apr. 25 due to a shoulder injury) is beginning to throw, and Roman Anthony (out since May 4 due to a finger injury) is making progress in his recovery (h/t Ian Browne of MLB.com).
“Garrett started throwing yesterday, at 50, 60 feet,” said Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy. “So as you guys know, he's been down a while. We're in the very infant stages of very short [distance]. But he did have a ball in his hand and was throwing it, which is good. ... Yeah, he’s got a chance [to pitch this season] for sure."
“Today, [Anthony] actually took overhand BP in the cage, which is another step in the right direction. So we're in phases with this,” said Tracy. “Early on, it was tee and flips, which he managed well. Hit BP today for the first time. I think it's a scheduled recovery day tomorrow, and then get back to overhand BP again. So we'll keep him in this phase now and see how he responds to that, and then hopefully advance him past that.”
The Red Sox could get some major reinforcements soon
It's easy to forget that Boston has been without its best pitcher and hitter for most of the season because of how great the team has looked for the past month and a half, but that's the situation. And if Crochet and Anthony can return by the end of the season, then the Red Sox' standing in the title picture should look even better.
The Red Sox' pitching staff has been among the best in the MLB all season long, and adding Crochet back into the mix should help them elevate things to the next level. And bringing Anthony back should bolster their lineup and offer some stability in the outfield.
As things stand, Boston's roster is already capable of winning games and making some magic happen in the postseason, but getting two of its best players back should help it move up another level.
There is still a lot of baseball left, but the Red Sox are finally looking like the team a lot of fans expected them to be coming into the season (if not even better), and the fact that they might be getting even better by October should greatly excite the fanbase.
