Red Sox Reportedly Eyeing Former Cy Young Winner Before Trade Deadline

Sandy Alcantara is a pitcher that Craig Breslow loves, and he's eying him down, but will Boston strike?

The Boston Red Sox have shown major interest in right-handed Sandy Alcantara. According to MassLive's Sean McAdam (h/t @tylermilliken_), the former 2022 National League Cy Young-winning pitcher has been involved in recent trade talks between the Red Sox and Miami Marlins.

So far, the Red Sox have been lacking starting pitching after the injuries to Kutter Crawford and Tanner Houck, along with signings like Walker Buehler not living up to the billing so far. They need another star pitcher, and Alcantara is checking that mark on chief baseball officer Craig Breslow's list. With the trade deadline fastly approaching, Breslow needs to make a move, and soon.

Red Sox Reportedly Eyeing Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara Before Deadline

Alcantara was amazing from 2019 to 2022, and he had been an All-Star twice during that time. He posted a 3.07 ERA with 598 strikeouts, with an ERA+ of 137, with a HR/9 of 0.9, and a K/9 of 8.0. In 2022, it was a career season, posting a 2.28 ERA, 207 strikeouts, a 180 ERA+, and a FIP of 2.99. Additionally, he had six complete games with one shutout, two MLB-leading stats that season.

Alcantara was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in the Marcell Ozuna trade way back in the 2018 offseason, where their infamous fourth firesale of the team took place (traded away notably Dee Gordon, Christian Yelich, and Giancarlo Stanton along with Ozuna).

The Marlins have never had players keep a permanent stay, and they're a mere bed and breakfast at this point. This is their continuation of their recent fire sale of 2024, where they traded Jazz Chisholm Jr., A.J. Puk, Trevor Rogers, Bryan De La Cruz, Josh Bell, Tanner Scott, and Luis Arraez. Now, Alcantara is next on that list, and the only reason he wasn't traded last year was that he was recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Since he's been back, Alcantara's trade value has declined rapidly this season. The once-great pitcher has been a shell of himself, giving up a league-leading 77 earned runs. The 5-9 record was never the concern since he's played on terrible Miami teams, but because of the league-leading runs, he's posted a 6.66 ERA this season, with the lowest K/9 in his career, with 6.7. The problem isn't giving up home runs, as he's been okay in that regard (1.1 HR/9).

His problem is getting runners on base, with a 3.4 BB/9 and a H/9 of 9.5 (the second-highest in his career). However, he's been getting a little better, having a scoreless outing against the San Diego Padres in his recent start. He went seven full innings, struck out four batters, and allowed one unearned run. This was the first scoreless outing he recorded since June 10th.

Now, the Red Sox are eyeing Alcantara, and Breslow would want him, since he loves his project pitchers. It feeds the ego, and his value is as low as it can be. He's already called Miami and discussed a trade, but nobody has been named as of right now.

If things end up working out, it won't be long until Alcantara is shipped out to Boston.
