With the Boston Red Sox coming down the stretch, the competition for roster spots will be fierce. The Red Sox look much different than they did when they broke Spring Training back in March and despite a season-ending injury for Triston Casas and the trade of Rafael Devers, Boston is in the middle of the American League Wild Card race with a 65-54 record entering Monday’s series opener with the Houston Astros.

This means that players may come and go over the next several weeks. One Red Sox hurler found out that his time in Boston will indeed be a short one and informed everyone of his release on social media Monday morning.

Red Sox Designate RHP Nick Burdi for Assignment

Red Sox reliever Nick Burdi took to his X account on Monday to announce that he had been designated for assignment. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo also confirmed the move on his social media account, as Burdi thanked the organization for his time with the team.

“Thank you @RedSox for letting me put a big league uniform on again,” Burdi wrote. “Will see what the next chapter brings!”

Burdi is a former second-round pick by the Minnesota Twins that has battled injuries including two Tommy John surgeries and thoracic outlet surgery. He made his major league debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018 but has never held a long-term role in a major league bullpen with his most extensive work coming when he posted a 1.86 ERA in 12 appearances for the New York Yankees last season.

The Red Sox signed Burdi to a minor league contract in February and he logged a 1.88 ERA in 20 appearances for Triple-A Worcester. The right-hander also tossed 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball after he was recalled in May but suffered a foot injury that landed him on the injured list and ultimately punched his ticket out of Boston.

Cotillo added that the Red Sox will recall left-hander Jovani Moran to take Burdi’s place on the roster. Moran was acquired in a Christmas Eve trade with the Twins in exchange for infielder Mickey Gasper and has posted a 3.44 ERA in 18 appearances for the Woo Sox this season.

It’s another swing of the revolving door in the Red Sox’s bullpen which saw Jorge Alcala designated for assignment last week. But Boston will hope the latest move will pay dividends as they look to secure a playoff spot.
