Red Sox Infielder on Chopping Block After Alex Bregman Return Update

Alex Bregman AND Masataka Yoshida are planning on coming back within this next week or so, so where does that leave Abraham Toro?

Abraham Toro came in from AAA Worcester shortly after the Triston Casas injury and has done surprisingly well for the Red Sox. Since his call-up, he's been hitting .293 with 5 HRs, and 11 doubles with an OPS+ of 119, the highest of his career in that latter stat in more than 40 games.

But now, everyone is coming back from their injuries. Masataka Yoshida is supposed to be back tomorrow, on Wednesday, the 9th, and now, Alex Bregman has given an update on his return. Per Christopher Smith on MassLive, Bregman stated this on his return: "Trending toward a return here really quickly, whether it's the end of this week or the first game after the break. One of those two. But hoping it will be the end of this week."

This is a great sign for the Red Sox, but also a bad sign for Toro, as he'll be indirectly losing a spot as their everyday first baseman. With Bregman returning, Marcelo Mayer will be put at second base. This also means that Romy Gonzalez (who's batting .326 with a .923 OPS in 40 games played) and Toro will be platooning at first, theoretically.

This could either mean that Toro could be just a platoon, or he'll be traded for what they can get for him at the deadline this year. To be fair, his value isn't getting any higher than this; he's on a 1-year, $1M deal with Boston (he's expendable), he's having an excellent season, and could be a contributing bench bat on other teams. It would be good for business to see this and have Toro get a shot at a potential World Series.

If he stays, he's platooning. With Romy being as red-hot a hitter as anyone in that lineup is right now? It's like Alex Cora has a choice of what toy to play with for the day. Regardless, Toro is a valuable piece and should be used as a platoon for any team he plays on, even if he stays here in Boston.
