Understandably, all the Boston Red Sox headlines remained focused on the blockbuster Rafael Devers trade over the last week. Debating whether or not it was the right move to trade the disgruntled star, escaping the contract with the limited speed, and future concerns could be viewed as a win. However, losing a noted Yankees killer and one of the better hitters in the league is an undeniable blow.
One thing that has gone a long way in covering that up is just how impressive the veteran's replacement has been. After spending the first nine years of his career with the Houston Astros, Alex Bregman upgraded franchises, jumping to Boston.
The Red Sox needed an answer at third base, with Devers continuing to show his struggles defensively. While this would ultimately start a divorce between the two sides, it was the right decision. One that Bregman has taken advantage of is being a huge defensive upgrade and providing surprising production at the plate. Bregman has been such an important piece of the Red Sox offense and isn't being given sufficient credit.
Alex Bregman Has Been the Perfect Boston Red Sox Addition
Bregman is hitting far above his career average at .299 and has added double-digit homers. With this in mind, it is fair to question if the Red Sox are a better team after parting ways with Devers. It is important to note that Boston did lose its best hitter, and this isn't an argument against this. Rather, pointing out the reality that the distraction of the drama Devers brought to the table covered up what has been a great season for the new Boston third baseman.
It is exciting to have a defensive option at the position you know isn't going to be a liability. Along with this, you have cleared any team drama and given this group an underdog mentality that it can adopt after the loss of their best hitter.
While Boston is five games back in the division race, the team remains in the thick of a wildcard chase. It wouldn't be a surprise to see this group continue to surge and find a way to sneak into the postseason. If that's the case, you can bet Bregman is going to be at the center of the action.
