Roman Anthony has been out of action for the Boston Red Sox since suffering a wrist injury against the Detroit Tigers on May 4. And unfortunately for him and the team, it seems like things are getting worse before they get better.
Before Monday's 3-1 win against the Kansas City Royals, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy provided an injury update on the Florida native and said he is dealing with "soreness and discomfort" (h/t Christopher Smith of MassLive.com).
“For the time being, we’re probably going to back off until we get through the off day,” interim manager Chad Tracy said. “Obviously we’re not going to have him swinging through soreness and discomfort. So not as good of news today. But we will back off and see what happens after the off day.”
Boston needs Roman Anthony back as soon as possible
The Red Sox have been a huge disappointment this season, and a lot of that has to do with their lackluster offense (which wasn't doing too hot even before Anthony's injury).
According to MLB.com, the Red Sox rank 29th in home runs (34), RBIs (163), and runs (170), and are tied for 10th-worst in batting average (.235). On paper, the team has some solid names in the lineup, but so many of them have left a lot to be desired (basically anybody whose first name doesn't start with a 'W,' and that includes Anthony himself. He is batting just .229 with one home run, five RBIs, and 30 strikeouts to 20 walks in 30 games).
Boston currently owns a 20-27 record and sits at the bottom of the AL East. There is still a lot of time for the team to figure things out, but it doesn't look good at this rate. They have won just three of their last eight games and batted .234 with 15 runs, 12 walks, and 62 strikeouts during that stretch.
Even though they had playoff aspirations this season after making their first appearance in four years last year, it's tough to imagine the Red Sox playing baseball this October with the way things are going.
The Red Sox desperately need a spark (or a complete shakeup... maybe Rafael Devers is available. He might be a solid addition to this team...hmm.....), because as it stands, there are very few, if any, reasons to believe they can actually turn it around, especially if Anthony is going to miss an even bigger chunk of time.
