Losing three of four games in a series against the New York Yankees isn't fun, especially given the playoff and division race, but the Boston Red Sox quickly turned things around with a comeback win against the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.
Boston trailed 1-0 in the first inning, 7-5 in the sixth inning, 8-5 in the seventh inning, and 8-7 in the ninth inning before ultimately winning 9-8 in the 10th.
It's just one game (against a Mariners team that is 64-74 and has been one of the biggest disappointments in MLB this season), but it's just another showcase of resilience, which has been the story of these Red Sox.
They're not on the same level as the 2004 Red Sox (...yet?), but this team always grinds until the end. That type of mindset is important to have come playoff time, and as things stand, it could be the biggest reason they make some noise in October.
The Red Sox have been resilient all season
Boston was one of the worst teams in the majors for most of the beginning of the season. On June 24, the team was 32-46 and owned the worst record in the AL (after losing a series to the Colorado Rockies, who currently own the worst record in all of MLB). Their pitching was elite, but they were one of the worst offensive teams in baseball, and they were dealing with numerous injuries (namely Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet).
They have since gone 43-17, have turned things around greatly offensively while remaining a fantastic pitching team, and are now squarely in the playoff picture. Entering the final month of the regular season, the Red Sox are 5.5 games above the Cleveland Guardians for the second AL Wild Card spot (and three games behind the Yankees for the first spot).
These Red Sox have what it takes to make some serious noise in the playoffs, especially in a mostly weak American League. They're talented, they play for each other, and they have the resilience to make things happen.
You look at the roster, and it is loaded with guys whose whole story has been resilience, namely Caleb Durbin (slow start to the season and fans were ready to send him away), Tyron Guerrero (had been out of MLB since 2019), Anthony (was injured for most of the season), and Mickey Gasper (suddenly looks like Barry Bonds after a few months in the minors).
There's a lot to like about this Red Sox team, even if there wasn't just a few months ago. They will look to end the regular season on a high note and potentially make their first World Series appearance in eight years. Whether they will or not remains to be seen, but at the very least, fans should feel confident in the team's outlook.
