What was supposed to be a promising season has become disastrous, and we’re only mid-way through May. The Boston Red Sox have been underwhelming to start the season, posting a 22-23 record, going 5-8 in the month of May.
Inconsistency has plagued this team all season, as they haven’t been able to consistently play quality baseball, and the past week is a prime example. Facing two good teams, the Sox would have their best series win of the season against the Kansas City Royals. Then they would follow that up by falling apart against the Detroit Tigers, getting swept by blowing the last two games.
Everyone besides Alex Bregman has had horrible slumps. The players just haven’t been able to play well at the same time, and it’s at the point in the season where it’s raising concerns.
One player that’s been having an awful few weeks is Trevor Story, who could be sent to the doghouse if his play continues.
Story’s Performance Has Been Abysmal
After starting the season being one of the only consistent contributors to the offense, Trevor Story’s performance has been concerning. Story went from an April slash line of .278/.322/.435 to .159/.196/.227 in May.
Story has been almost non-existent at the plate this month, recording seven hits in 44 at-bats. His one home run and three RBIs in May all came from one game. This output from Story is alarming, considering that Story has remained healthy this season, only missing three games.
His tenure with the Red Sox has been nothing short of disappointing, as he hasn’t been able to have a season where he’s appeared in more than 94 games with the club. Although he’s signed through the 2028 season, it’s time that the Red Sox send him to the doghouse and bring in Marcelo Mayer to replace him.
Marcelo Mayer has been on one this season, posting eight home runs, 39 RBIs, and a slash line of .282/.350/.500 in 36 games of Triple-A play. Mayer was drafted fourth overall by the Red Sox in 2021 and has since been one of the team’s best prospects.
With Story’s substandard tenure and the Red Sox’s underwhelming start, it’s time for the Red Sox to call up Mayer to replace Story at shortstop. The Red Sox need to show some urgency to improve their play by bringing up one of their prospects before it’s too late.
