Despite Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow's promises of building a winning roster for next season, whether the team has been able to do that remains a big question. The Red Sox added Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler to the rotation, but with Spring Training right around the corner, did they do enough to make them a contender in 2025?

Unless the team is able to make another splash in free agency, aka sign Alex Bregman, most Red Sox fans' answer to that question would be a no.

The Red Sox have been frustratingly silent since the start of the new year, not making any additions to their 40-man roster besides backup catcher Blake Sabol. Fans have been desperately waiting for a new slugger, with speculations focused on trading for Nolan Arenado or signing Bregman.

All signs point to Boston's lack of willingness to break the bank for Bregman. The former Astros star is represented by Scott Boras, and unsurprisingly, he has been playing hardball in negotiations. MLB insider Bob Nightengale recently reported that the Red Sox are also playing hardball, driving the negotiations to an impasse.

Red Sox Refuse to Offer A Six-Year Contract for Alex Bregman

Bregman and Boras are reportedly asking for a six-year deal this winter. The Red Sox, along with the Tigers and the Astros, however, aren't going over four years.

While Bregman is reportedly willing to move to second base for the Red Sox, the future belongs to Kristian Campbell in that spot. That is why it is understandable that the team doesn't want to make a long-term commitment to Bregman before his age-31 season.

Whether the Red Sox or Bregman budge remains to be seen but considering how badly Boston needs a right-handed bat in their lineup, they are running out of time to continue playing hardball.
