After taking two out of three games from the New York Yankees over the weekend, the Boston Red Sox made a seismic roster move on Monday.

The Red Sox called up the top prospect in baseball, outfielder Roman Anthony, from Triple-A Worcester, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. To make room for Anthony on the 40-man roster, Boston designated veteran infielder Ryan Noda for assignment.

Since the Red Sox DFA’d Noda, they have a week to trade him or hope that he gets through waivers unclaimed in the next 48 hours. If the latter happens, Noda would stay within the Red Sox organization as non-roster depth.

The Red Sox just recently acquired Noda last month from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash. When Boston made the move for Noda, it was in the midst of their ongoing first base dilemma, which still isn’t solved.

The 29-year-old Noda immediately reported to Triple-A, where he actually hit the ball well, which is shocking as the veteran didn’t do much with the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate (.148 with four home runs and eight RBI).

However, in 13 games at Worcester, the left-handed slugger slashed .378/.519/.703 with three doubles, three home runs, and 12 RBI. He also had a scorching 1.221 OPS.

If you’re part of Boston’s front office, you couldn’t ask for anything better from Noda, who is a career .212 hitter in the majors. The last time we saw Noda in the major leagues was in 2024 with the Athletics.

The veteran infielder didn’t perform well at the plate with the A’s, slashing .137/.255/.211 with one home run and four RBI in 36 games. Noda also had a .211 BABIP and a 33.3 strikeout percentage.

Nonetheless, we’ll see if Noda finds his way back to the Red Sox organization. If he continues to hit well in Triple-A, maybe he makes it up to Boston during the regular season.
