The Boston Red Sox have a gold mine at first base already, and it's from whom everyone wanted them to get this year. Nathaniel Lowe, once DFA'd by the Washington Nationals, is now on the Red Sox and has transformed into a completely different player than he was when he was in D.C.
He's only played in six games, but he has made those six games count. In 20 plate appearances, he's gone 7-16 with three walks and only one strikeout. He's hit two doubles, one home run, and driven in seven runs. He's batting .438 in that six-game period with a .750 slugging percentage. Will these two numbers dip? Yes, but it's still something to be amazed at.
Nathaniel Lowe Is Already Making a Big Difference for the Red Sox
Lowe was a former World Series Champion with the Texas Rangers in 2023 and was a key factor in many aspects. Before that, he was making his way through the ranks in Tampa Bay, so he knows the stakes in the AL East. His best season was in 2022, with a slash line of .302/.358/.492/.851.
He made an immediate statement in his first start for the Red Sox, at Fenway Park, nonetheless. He hit a game-tying two-run home run for his 17th big fly of the season. It was an amazing moment for him, as he created a fast and growing relationship with the fans that has been growing rapidly since his arrival.
He's fit for October, and he's a great clubhouse influence for the younger guys as well, which is why CBO Craig Breslow took no time to sign him for the rest of the 2025 push for the playoffs. He was a gift in a hand basket for Boston, and Lowe is proving that in spades.
It turns out that the Nationals were the problem, not him. With the route he's on, the Red Sox may have just added yet another weapon for that offense.
