The Boston Red Sox just made a move for Steven Matz, but that may not be enough. If the Red Sox want to make a statement, it's now! A 34-year-old starter turned reliever isn't what the Red Sox should truly desire. Do they see what the Mets, Phillies, and Mariners are doing? It's time to splurge.
Jon Heyman on X tweeted that Camilo Doval would be a possible arm that the Giants could be willing to let go at 6 PM EST tonight. Many other arms are available, including Cade Smith, Dennis Santana, Griffin Jax, and even Mason Miller.
Giants closer Camilo Doval is now being discussed in possible trade scenarios. Many relievers went yesterday but still on board: M. Miller, R. Suarez, Bednar, D. Santana, C. Smith, Jax, R. Iglesias, P. Maton, P. Johnson, S. Wilson, Finnegan, Fairbanks, more (not all will move)

However, Mason Miller would be a tough price to pay, and the Red Sox may want to save those prospects for later down the line when they want to make a big offseason trade. So Miller is a maybe, but he's not a flat-out no, not with the talent he brings.
The biggest candidates for a successful acquisition for Breslow at this deadline would be Cade Smith, Dennis Santana, or Camilo Doval. Most of these pitchers are Andrew Bailey-like pitchers (not Cade Smith), emphasizing their unhittable breaking stuff. Cade Smith, however, will emphasize his unhittable fastball that averages 96 mph and then his splitter that averages 88 mph that stymies hitters at the plate.
All of these men should be acquirable, and they're all under control for at least the next season. If things happen where the Red Sox need to part with a bullpen pitcher of their own, they should give up one of two pitchers: Greg Weissert and/or Jorge Alcala, or even Chris Murphy, for that matter, who the latter has been outstanding since his return from Tommy John Surgery.
All these deals could be done, but they won't happen until the end of the deadline, most likely. With many moves still coming and the phone lines buzzing through GM after GM, we're all just going to have to wait and see.
