On the second day of free agency, the New England Patriots bolstered the wide receiver room by adding Romeo Doubs, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

This was an obvious need for New England's offense, and they addressed the concern by signing Doubs to a four-year, $80 million deal. The newest Patriots wideout is coming off a strong season with the Green Bay Packers and should only continue trending in the right direction with a young, rising star QB delivering him the ball in Drake Maye.

Doubs finished the 2025 campaign with 55 receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games, while contributing eight catches for 124 yards and one touchdown in the playoffs. Now, Doubs steps into a role where he will be more of a featured target than he was at any point during his successful tenure in Green Bay.

After releasing Stefon Diggs, Doubs could be poised to fill his role on the offense. More importantly, Doubs could be the answer to one of the Patriots' biggest weaknesses on offense, finishing off drives that reach the red zone with touchdowns

Romeo Doubs Should Help Patriots' Red Zone Offense

During the regular season, the Patriots' offense was one of the best in the league, finishing third in total yards and yards per game, per ESPN. While things weren't as successful in the playoffs, it was a much-needed improvement from the prior year. One area that was a struggle in 2025 was red zone scoring.

When New England entered the red zone this past season, it scored a touchdown on only 55.71 percent of those drives, 20th-best in the NFL in 2025, per team rankings. If the Patriots want any chance at returning to the Super Bowl, they'll need to see improvement in red zone touchdowns, and Romeo Doubs could be the perfect solution.

With Green Bay this past season, Doubs scored five of his six touchdowns inside the 20, with four of them being inside the 10, per Pro Football Reference. Adding someone as reliable in the red zone as Doubs has proven to be was a must for the Patriots, and the free agent addition is someone you can trust. New England's offense as a whole benefits from Doubs' presence in the red zone, since teams will have to focus on shutting him down, opening up avenues for his teammates.

While the Patriots haven't been as active as they were in free agency last year, Doubs is a strong signing who can make the offense more dynamic than it was this past season. Along with Doubs, the Patriots have added fullback Reggie Gilliam and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. Defensively, Dre'mont Jones will be a fun addition to a unit that impressed in the playoffs.
