The Patriots are nearing the end of another disappointing season and one new report suggests head coach Jerod Mayo may not get the opportunity to stay with the franchise.

Mayo's first season in New England has been filled with mistakes and plenty of losses. Sitting at 3-10 with four games to go, it sounds like the organization isn't happy with their young coach. If the Patriots get blown out over these last several games, the front office could soon be looking for another new leading man.

Considering they play the Cardinals, Chargers, and Bills twice, it's hard to imagine this team being competitive, let alone actually win one of them.

Patriots Could Fire HC Jerod Mayo After First Year According to New Rumor

Robert Kraft and Patriots fans are not used to the losing they've endured. Bill Belichick is widely considered to be the greatest coach ever and while the team is aware they're rebuilding, Mayo's performance hasn't inspired much confidence.

As Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal reports, that could mean he's let go. Expectations remain that Mayo will stay but if the Patriots get dominated over the final month, a significant possibility, then Kraft could make the shocking decision to fire Mayo.

New England currently ranks 29th in yards per play (4.7) and 18th in opponent yards per play (5.5). Drake Maye looks like a potential star, though the roster lacks many building blocks outside of him. The offensive line is among the worst in the NFL while the once-vaunted defense has been torched by the top offenses they've played.

It's easy to point out Mayo's faults, yet it's still true that he wasn't given a fair chance to compete. The Patriots' poor roster-building decisions over the last few seasons, largely attributed to Belichick, left Mayo in a spot where he had to turn sour lemons into lemonade. So far, he's been unable to accomplish that goal.

Even if Mayo stays in 2025, he'll enter the season on one of the hottest seats in the league. Rumors like this are never a good sign and speak to the uncertainty around his job status.

Kraft is seemingly not a patient man. Whether or not Mayo retains the job, he'll have to improve quickly or next season will certainly be his last.
