Surprise Mac Jones News Emerges After Poor Start for Jaguars
By Jovan Alford
Former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones made his first start for the Jacksonville Jaguars last week against the Minnesota Vikings.
Jones got the start in place of Trevor Lawrence, who was ruled out with a left shoulder injury he suffered in Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The former Patriots quarterback didn’t put up earth-shattering numbers against the Vikings.
Jones completed 14-of-22 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns (three turnovers overall). He was sacked three times as the Jaguars’ offense only scored seven points.
Despite his less-than-stellar first start, the Jaguars are sticking with Jones. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Jones will start again on Sunday after Lawrence was ruled out.
The former Pats quarterback will try to play better against a Lions’ defense that’s allowing the fifth-most passing yards per game (244.2). However, Detroit is ranked third in QB pressures (103) this season, which doesn’t bode well for Jones and Jags’ offensive line.
The 26-year-old quarterback was under immense pressure from the Vikings’ defense, which led to three turnovers. With Jones set to become a free agent in the offseason, these starting opportunities could help him.
Before making his Jags’ debut last week, the last time we saw Jones start a game was in Week 12 last season against the New York Giants.
Jones completed a mediocre 12-of-21 passes for 89 yards and two interceptions against the Giants. He was ultimately benched by the Pats and replaced by Bailey Zappe.
