Top Coaching Candidate Reveals Why He Rejected Patriots
The New England Patriots' next head coaching hire was pretty clear to everyone when they fired Jarod Mayo, with Mike Vrabel on the market. The team moved quickly through the interview process for a few candidates before hiring Vrabel last Sunday. Nonetheless, it was important that the Patriots at least considered other candidates even if they were certain Vrabel was the hire.
One candidate the Patriots reached out to was Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Glenn has helped elevate a Lions defense full of backups because of injury to a respectable unit this season. As a result, Glenn has raised organizations' eyebrows around the NFL, including the Patriots.
That said, Glenn declined the Patriots' virtual interview request last Thursday. Glenn spoke to the media for the first time since denying the request on Wednesday.
When asked about it, he said, " "just wasn't the best situation for me," according to ESPN's Eric Woodyard. Woodyard also added Glenn doesn't hold any ill will towards the Patriots organization.
Patriots News: Aaron Glenn comments on why he didn't interview with the Patriots
Glenn's assessment of the Patriots' situation is definitely an interesting one. As it stands, the Patriots are top five in cap space this offseason and have an ascending young quarterback. Although Glenn's specialty is defense, having a talented QB is always important for a team's success.
At the same time, Glenn may have looked at the defense and thought it would take too long to mold it into what he wanted it to be. While caches typically like building rosters in their eyes, Glenn may want to go to a place with a bit more talent on the defense after what he's built in Detroit.
On the other hand, Vrabel was aware of the Patriot's talent deficiencies and decided to take the job anyway. However, a good bit of Vrabel's decision to become the Patriots head coach may have had to do with his history in the organization. Still, Glenn's comments on the Patriots not being the right fit remain surprising, given he and Vrabel are both defensive coaches.
