The Boston Red Sox had some exciting, young talent entering the 2025 season. Kristian Campbell has already made an immediate impact with the major league club as a second baseman and outfielder. But fans are waiting to see when fellow top prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer will make their major league debut.

The process has required patience even as the Red Sox have had a modest 14-13 start to the season. But an injury could alter things even if it occurs at the minor league level. On Friday night, the Red Sox received an unfortunate injury at Triple-A Worcester and it could grow into a concern as they try to figure out when to call up some of their young studs.

Red Sox Prospect Roman Anthony Leaves Game With Foot Injury

Anthony was bit by the injury bug as he fouled a pitch off his foot during the Woo Sox’ 8-3 loss to Syracuse on Friday night. Anthony was removed from the game as he tried to return to the outfield but Worcester manager Chad Tracy said the Woo Sox removed the 20-year-old as a precaution.

“I think he’s OK,” Tracy said via WEEI’s Rob Bradford. “Obviously they are going to check him out. He fouled that ball off the top of his foot and kept going. In the middle of the game it was stiffening up on him. We made the decision to precautionarily get him out of there. They have to take a look. I think he’s day-to-day. He will be OK but obviously they have to obviously look at him and see.”

Tracy’s update suggests Anthony’s injury is nothing major. But it’s another hurdle the young outfielder has faced as he tries to make his way to the majors.

Anthony is producing at the plate, hitting .313/.451/.588 with five homers and 14 RBI in 23 games at Triple-A this season and has put together a .223/.459/.545 line with eight homers and 34 RBI in 58 career games at Worcester. But this season has also included a few injury scares with Anthony recently returning to the outfield after a shoulder injury.

Whenever Anthony gets over his ailments, he’ll continue pushing for a spot in the major leagues. Wilyer Abreu is entrenched in right field, hitting .271/.386/.482 with four homers and 15 RBI in his first 26 games. But centerfielder Ceddanne Rafaela has struggled, hitting .230/.305/.311 with one home run, 10 RBI and six steals. With Jadden Duran in left field, Anthony’s best bet to get to the majors is replacing Rafaela as Tracy shot down rumors that Anthony would move to first base to expedite the process.

It leaves Red Sox fans waiting for Anthony’s call to the major leagues. But for now, they can breathe a sigh of relief as he appears to have avoided a major injury.
