Top Red Sox Prospect Making a Strong Case for Big League Call-Up With Recent Play

Jhostynxon Garcia is slugging it in AAA, and he needed a big league call-up yesterday.

The Boston Red Sox may have another player to add to that logjam of an outfield, because Jhostynxon "The Password" Garcia is not waiting any longer. He wants that call-up, just like his teammates Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell before him.

Garcia originally started in AA Portland for 33 games, but was immediately promoted after the inevitable Marcelo Mayer call-up. Now he's slugging 16 home runs in AAA Worcester, while batting .303 with 11 doubles and 49 RBIs.

Jhostynxon Garcia Deserves a Call-Up With Recent Play

Since the trade deadline, there have been so many promotions within the Red Sox minor leagues. Since James Tibbs III was traded to the Dodgers for Dustin May, Miguel Bleis was called up to AA Portland to fill the void in the outfield. When Blaze Jordan was traded to the Cardinals for Steven Matz, they called up Mikey Romero to AAA Worcester. Not only that, but pitchers David Sandlin and Connelly Early were both promoted to Worcester within that time.

The Red Sox are making adjustments, and they want the fruitful farm to keep growing in their roots. The problem is that since they didn't solve that logjam, their value for Garcia as trade bait may just be limited, if he is bait at all.

Depending on what the Red Sox want to do in the offseason, their prospect will mostly be considered in any deal that comes their way. It's evident when they wanted to trade for Joe Ryan, but the Twins wouldn't bite at their price. Breslow reportedly offered every prospect he could, including The Password and #1 prospect Franklin Arias, in packages for trade deals. So what would be different in the offseason when they pursue those goals again?

Remember, the trade deadline isn't a make-or-break for a long-term future like the Red Sox have. With their farm system, the playoffs are merely optional this early in their window. To them, it's a pitstop before the offseason, and Garcia may not be in their plans moving forward.

However, they have been moving him to first base and trying him out over there. So far, he's been practicing and holding his own. Worcester manager Chad Tracy was a corner infielder in his playing days, and he's been doing numbers with Kristian Campbell learning the position as well.

If Garcia can figure out that first base spot, he's a shoo-in for the September call-ups in a couple of weeks...and possibly the first baseman that the Red Sox truly wanted out of Triston Casas, who's injury-prone and heavily stalled in development. He might be able to stay if he can unlock his potential there.
