The Boston Red Sox are gearing up for one of their most exciting Spring Training games of the year as they’ll take on the Tampa Bay Rays in their annual Spring Breakout game on March 13.
The showcase was established last season as a way to feature the top prospects in the game across Grapefruit and Cactus League ballparks. MLB.com revealed that 71 of the top 100 prospects in the game will play in these games and it adds a layer of excitement to a typical exhibition game.
For the Red Sox that means a chance to see their future on the baseball diamond. But in the case of one top prospect, it’s a recovery that his him ready just in time to show off his skills.
Top Red Sox Prospect Marcelo Mayer Overcomes Illness To Make Spring Breakout Roster
Marcelo Mayer is one of the Red Sox prospects that represent the future of the organization, ranking 12th on MLB Pipeline’s top prospects list. But while he was a lock to make the Spring Breakout roster, he needed to overcome a stomach bug that has ripped through the Boston clubhouse.
While his status may have been in doubt, WEEI’s Rob Bradford reports that manager Alex Cora has deemed Mayer ready to go and he is set to play in Friday’s Grapefruit League game against the Miami Marlins.

It may not be enough for Mayer to make the Red Sox Opening Day roster, as he is expected to start the year in Triple-A. But it gives fans a chance to see the future as he’ll be joined by outfielder Roman Anthony (No. 2 overall prospect by MLB) and second baseman Kristian Campbell (No. 7).
Infielder Franklin Arias (No.75) is another top prospect that made the Spring Breakout roster along with some of the other top prospects in the orginzation including outfielder Jhostnyxon Garcia, infuelder Yoelin Cespedes and pitcher David Sandlin.

The Red Sox will battle the Rays at the Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, Fla. at 7:05 p.m. on March 13.
