The Boston Red Sox opened the 2025 season with a 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Thursday. Their opening-day victory comes after solid spring training from the ball club. That said, one young Red Sox star who failed to make the opening day roster but had a strong overall performance is unhappy with the organization's decision to send him back to the minors.

On Friday, Marcelo Mayer joined the Jones and Keffe Radio show, where he was asked whether he believed he had done enough to earn a big league spot.

"Yeah, obviously, like you said, all the stuff isn't up to me. But as a player, based on my performance, I feel like I earned a spot on that team. With that being said, things just didn't go my way, and now I'm here, and I'm just going to get after it every day and keep doing what I'm doing. "

Marcelo Mayer Frustrated After Missing Red Sox Opening Day Roster

Mayer's frustration with not making the opening day roster are complexly valid. The 22-year-old had a monster spring training, hitting .333/.455/.528. While that's an impressive production, if Mayer made the opening day roster, he would be veteran Trevor Story's backup.

Although having two players with the ability to produce from the plate at the same position isn't necessarily a bad thing, Boston likely didn't want a young prospect with the potential not to be a full-time starter. As a result, sending him to the minors was the best option as it allowed him to keep developing.

Nevertheless, many Red Sox fans would still like to see the 22-year-old take the field in the majors this year. Unfortunately, according to Mayer, there is no timetable for a call-up.

Regardless of there being no plans for a call-up right now, Red Sox fans will be begging for one at the first sight of Story struggling this season.
