The Boston Red Sox saw their 2025 season come to an end on Thursday night in Game 3 of the American League Wild Card Series against their longstanding rivals, the New York Yankees. After starting the series on a high note in Game 1 behind Garrett Crochet, the Red Sox couldn’t steal one of the last two games.
Instead of playing against the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL Division Series, the attention now turns to the offseason and the futures of Alex Bregman and Trevor Story. Bregman has an opt-out following this season, and it's the same for Story.
Following Thursday night’s loss to the Yankees, Story didn’t want to get into details about his opt-out; however, it sounds like he isn't ready to leave Boston just yet.
“It’s not at the top of mind. I’m not gonna speak on that right now. But I came here to be here for a long time,” Story said via Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.
Trevor Story Makes His Stance Clear on Playing with Red Sox in 2026
Story, who struggled in his first three years with the BoSox due to injury, finally looked like the player we saw in Colorado to start his career.
The 32-year-old infielder slugged .263 with 25 home runs and 96 RBIs in 157 games. Story also had a career-high 31 stolen bases. The last time the veteran infielder played in 100-plus games was in 2021 with the Rockies. Coincidentally, that was also the last time Story had 20 or more home runs in a season (24).
During the final month of the regular season, the veteran infielder locked in at the plate, as he hit .302 with six doubles, three home runs, and 12 RBI. Story also racked up seven stolen bases and posted a .795 OPS, as he played nearly as many games this season (157) as he did in the three previous seasons combined (163). He carried his September success into the wild card against the Yankees, where he hit .385 (5-for-13) with a home run, three RBI, and a stolen base.
Overall, Red Sox fans were content with the performance of Story in 2025 and definitely do not want to see him playing elsewhere next season. If the front office opts in, the veteran infielder will at least be in Boston until after the 2026 season.
In 2027, however, the Red Sox have a club option on Story, and no one knows what type of player he'll be at that point. One thing they do know now, at least, is that he finally looked like the guy they signed to a huge six-year, $140 million contract in 2022.
