Although we’re less than four months away from regular season play, we’ve officially got our first look at the 2025 New England Patriots this week, with the team’s first two OTA practices. While the OTAs aren’t mandatory and are non-contact, it’s a good practice period for the players to build chemistry and the coaches to install their system.
It’s also an important time for undrafted free agents to display their skills and prove their worth to a team. So far, one undrafted Patriots wide receiver is already making a strong case that he’s worthy of a spot.
Efton Chism III Is Turning Heads at OTAs
Efton Chism III is already generating buzz with his performance so far in OTAs. Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald noted Chism has been heavily involved in starting OTAs, which is a good sign for him.
Chism, 23, played five years at Eastern Washington and is coming off a stellar season, posting a school-record 120 catches, 1,311 yards, and 13 touchdowns. Chism enters a packed receiving room, as the Patriots currently have 12 receivers on the roster.
It’s going to be an uphill battle for Chism, as teams usually keep six receivers on the active roster and one on the practice squad. However, if Chism continues his play, he can have a real shot at making the team.
History is on Chism’s side as the Patriots have had a UDFA make the team 20 out of the last 21 years. The Patriots are in desperate need of receivers who can create separation, and with Chism’s quickness and production in the slot, he can be a potential piece to the roster.
Still, it’s only OTAs and the practices are non-contact, but seeing the praise the Chism has received from reporters should be inspiring to Patriots fans, who hope the offense is much improved this upcoming season.
