The Patriots fell short once again in Week 16, losing 24-21 to the Bills despite putting up an excellent effort against a division rival. While it was a strong performance overall, one player proved he cannot remain a starter moving forward.

Undrafted rookie offensive tackle Demontrey Jacobs has been one of the NFL's worst linemen this season. He was terrible once again against Buffalo, cementing his status as a possible cut candidate this offseason.

Jacobs makes sense as a depth piece, though he's clearly incapable of holding a starting job at this point. If the Patriots are serious about surrounding Drake Maybe with talent, it's time to actually invest in an offensive line.

Patriots OT Demontrey Jacobs Has Miserable Game in Week 16

While Jacobs was never considered to be a starting-caliber player, he's been a nightmare. He ranks 128th out of 132 qualified tackles at Pro Football Focus, proving why no NFL team felt he was worth drafting.

New England's disaster season isn't Jacobs' fault, but he's obviously not part of the solution. Maye appears to be a legitimate quarterback, yet he can't develop unless the Patriots surround him with talent.

Over the last five years, perhaps no front office has performed worse than New England's. They've routinely made horrible decisions in the draft and free agency, leading to multiple failed seasons with nothing to show for it. Jacobs could be a depth piece in the long-term, though no intelligent organization would ever let him actually start.

As an undrafted rookie, Jacbos has time to grow. The Patriots thrust him into a marquee role before he was ready, so it's no wonder things didn't go according to plan. Until New England's brass learns how to actually acquire talent, nothing else they do will matter.

This is a team devoid of intelligence, largely due to the poor decisions made by Robert Kraft and his group. Hopefully, the Patriots take a long, hard look in the mirror over the next few months. Otherwise, there's no reason for fans to have hope moving forward.
