Patriots Wide Receivers: Hogan or Washington?

The New England Patriots had a need at wide receiver and addressed it with Chris Hogan, and Nate Washington.

The free agent market at wide receiver was actually not that bad in terms of players and names out there. The prices got to be a little ridiculous which is almost always the case when talking about free agent anything in sports,

Even still, a three-year, $12 million contract for Hogan seems like a little much.  In three seasons Hogan has never missed a game, and still has only managed six touchdowns. To be fair the Buffalo Bills passing game has not exactly been very good since the days of Jim Kelly, shout out to 1990’s Bills football.

Hogan is coming to the Patriots just as a guy not the guy, and that is fine, but he isn’t the type of guy that makes a lot of sense here. The Patriots have dink and dunk guys already and if they were interested in throwing out some money ( 7.5 million guaranteed) why not go get something that you don’t have? A deep threat would be nice to have and fun to watch but that doesn’t suit the offense or Tom Brady, but just an outside of the numbers guy to spread the field a little bit would have made some sense.

The Patriots also added Nate Washington for just over a million dollars this year. Washington plus an outside threat would have made more sense to me. Washington is arguably a better player than Hogan to add to the confusion.

Washington recorded 47 catches and four touchdowns in the joke that is known as the Houston Texan offense. Hogan had only 36 grabs and two touchdowns in what seems like a better offense.

Does that mean that Washington will be better than Hogan? Who knows…

Veteran wide outs have a history of coming to New England and not making any impact at all.  If I were a betting man I would put my money on Washington being a better fit than Hogan. Washington has been a short game type of receiver for a longer period of time. Hogan is bigger and younger and  does have a higher ceiling in the offense.

In a perfect world both guys will just slide in behind Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski, quietly.
