The Boston Celtics (44-26) return home to take on the Washington Wizards (42-27) Monday night at TD Garden.

With both teams are coming off disappointing losses, the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards are gearing up for a big showdown at TD Garden Monday night.

Isaiah Thomas is expected to return to the lineup Monday night in a game that could get a little chippy.  The Wizards are just 1.5 games behind the Celtics and out to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with.

More from Boston Celtics

In the last matchup, Washington took it to the Celtics in a game they labeled as “the Funeral game.”  In the 123-108 beat down, the Wizards backed up their talk and clearly got the Celtics attention.

Following Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, guard Avery Bradley talked about how big the game tonight is between the two teams on the court and in the standings.

"“It’s big.  That’s a cool thing about the NBA,” Bradley said, via CSNNE.com.  “We played (against Philly) and it was unfortunately a loss for us.  But we’re playing a very good team (tonight).  We can forget about this game.  And worry about Washington.  We know they’re going to come out and be ready to play.  It’s our job to make sure we’re prepared mentally and physically.”"

Game Notes

With a victory, the Celtics can distance themselves from the Wizards for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.  A win tonight would be huge for Boston because it would add momentum to the start of a six-game home stand.

Washington leads the season series 2-1, including the 123-108 victory at the Verizon Center.  A win by the Celtics would also tie the series at 2-2 and give Boston the tie-breaker over the Wizards because they have a better Conference record.

Projected starting lineup

G – Isaiah Thomas

G – Avery Bradley

F- Jae Crowder

F – Amir Johnson

C – Al Horford

Who’s Hot

Al Horford remains hot for the Boston Celtics.  The forward/center scored a season-high 27 points against the Philadelphia 76ers in a losing effort.  He added eight rebounds and six assists, but disappeared in the fourth quarter as Boston watched a 13-point lead disappear.

Following the game, Horford acknowledged the Celtics lost the game more than the 76ers won the game.

"“I don’t think it was so much them,” Horford said, via CSNNE.com.  “We probably got away from running some of the offensive stuff we ran earlier in the game.  We just did some different looks.  That’s how we lost.”"

Prediction

With Isaiah Thomas returning to the lineup and after what happened the last time these two teams met, I think the Celtics will take it to the Wizards Monday night.  Marcus Smart and Avery Bradley will be huge defensively against John Wall and Bradley Beal.

Expect for the game to be tight and chippy through the first half.  The Celtics will pull away in the second half due to their defensive intensity and timely scoring by Thomas, Jae Crowder and Al Horford.
