Boston Red Sox Call Up Bryce Brentz
By Blake Yagman
The Boston Red Sox Have Called Up Bryce Brentz After An Injury to Chris Young.
Tonight, Bryce Brentz will make his first start for the Boston Red Sox against the Texas Rangers. The 27-year-old left fielder was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket after Chris Young was sent to the disabled list last night.
Bryce Brentz, a right-handed native of Crossville, Tennessee, was selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft. Brentz immediately caught fire; he burst onto the minor league scene in 2011, hitting .306/.365/.574 with 30 HR and 94 RBI. Over the next four seasons, Bryce would continue to contribute offensively; each season, hit a minimum of 12 HR and 50 RBI.
Statistically, Brentz’ numbers show that the more at-bats he gets per season, the better his statistics are. His two finest offensive seasons, 2011 and 2012, were also the years in which he played most consistently. Because of the Red Sox injuries in left field (Brock Holt, Blake Swihart, and Chris Young), Brentz could have an opportunity to play often through the All-Star break. Further, the demotion of Rusney Castillo gives Brentz a clear path to earning even more playing time.
This is not Brentz’ first action with the Red Sox, he was called up to the majors initially in August of 2014. During his short stint with the Red Sox, he hit .308 in 26 at-bats. And, because Brentz has spent time at the major league level before, he will hopefully be comfortable with performing at a similar rate.
If Brentz does not perform will, it will be interesting to see whether Red Sox GM Dave Dombrowski attempts to acquire an additional outfielder. With the Red Sox are already (notoriously) looking for an ace to accompany David Price and Steven Wright, the team’s wish list may just be beginning to grow.
In terms of the teams current left fielders, the injury updates look bleak. Brock Holt has been suffering with a concussion for nearly six weeks; and, although he is on rehab assignment in the minor leagues, there is no guarantee he will be able to play at the same level immediately. Blake Swihart will not be ready to return to the team at least until August; and Chris Young’s hamstring injury will likely keep him out through the All-Star break.
