Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas paid tribute to Hall-of-Famer Allen Iverson calling him the “best player to every play the game.”

Undersized with a knack of putting the ball in the hoop, Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas has much in common with Allen Iverson. At 5-foot-9, Thomas has overcome many obstacles to stand tall. His hard work, determination and heart have made him an NBA All-Star and he is hopeful he can become just as impactful as Iverson.

As an undersized guard, Iverson was one of the most impactful players to ever step foot on an NBA court. His scoring ability and natural instinct to lead his teams is a reason why he is one of 10 individuals to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield this weekend.

The former Philadelphia 76ers star has not only still impacts the youth who look up to him, he still inspires players like Isaiah Thomas. The Celtics guard took time to reflect upon his admiration of the Hall of Famer while volunteering at a Celtics service day event at McKay School in East Boston.

“It’s well deserved,” Thomas said. “Wish I could be there. It’s a big honor for him, not just him, but everybody that looked up to him. He’s pound for pound the best player to ever play the game in my eyes, and on the court I definitely want to be just like him.”

Thomas, still memorized by his meeting with Allen Iverson last month, still has a chance to accomplish something Iverson never did…win an NBA championship. The

guard also reflected on the words of inspiration Iverson shared with him, words that may play a role in helping him elevate his game.

“He told me I’m cut from the same cloth as him,” Thomas continued. “I go about my ways the same way he did, and now that he’s told me that, nobody can tell me anything. So that’s a check off my list that he approves of my game, and he’s really a fan of not just me as a basketball player but me as a person, and that says a lot, because I followed every footstep that he took and I want to be just like him.”
