New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick took time to discuss the shocking trade involving linebacker Jamie Collins.

If you are a Patriots fans, you should be use to shocking deals involving players.  Whether its Lawyer Malloy, Richard Seymour, Logan Mankins or now Jamie Collins, Bill Belichick always believes he is doing what’s best for the team.

So far, his track record is favorable.  But that doesn’t make Monday’s trade sending Collins to the Cleveland Browns for a third-round draft pick any less confusing.  The coach joined Dale & Holley with Thornton on Monday to discuss the deal.  Although he didn’t get into specifics, he did shed a little light on the reasoning behind the deal.

"“In the end, we did what we felt was best for the football team,” Belichick said via WEEI. “There were a lot of things to take into consideration. I’m sure we could bring up a lot of points to talk about, but in the end, that is really the bottom line.”"

One of those things was obviously money.  Collins was due to become a free agent after the season and the two sides were apparently unable to come to an agreement for an extension.  Instead of letting Collins walk, the team decided to get something for him.

Some can convincingly argue that that something was not enough and the team could’ve used him for the rest of the season. The move also proves once again that no player is above the team no matter how talented the player.  Jamie Collins will get his money somewhere else.  And as usual, life will go on for the Patriots.

Devin McCourty on Jamie Collins trade:  Monday’s shocking trade involving linebacker Jamie Collins not only rocked Patriots fans, but also deeply stunned the players.  Safety and team captain Devin McCourty expressed the team’s shock.

"“Jamie is arguably our best defensive player,” McCourty told CSNNE.com. “When you get a guy like Jamie who was here for four years on the team, a very productive player, to lose him is a bit shocking to everybody on the team.”"

Elandon Roberts:  With Collins now gone, rookie linebacker Elandon Roberts will get more playing time and will have a chance to excel.  So far, the rookie has been a pleasant surprise and can be a nice compliment to Dont’a Hightower.  Other linebackers such as Shea McClellin, Barkevious Mingo and the newly acquired Kyle Van Noy will also have a chance to step in and help fill the void left by Collins.
