New England Patriots have lost another offensive weapon as Danny Amendola went down Sunday with an Ankle injury.

Danny Amendola hasn’t been a major weapon in the New England Patriots offense this season, but has played a very important role.

During Sunday’s 26-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams, Amendola limped off the field following a punt return late in the game.  It was later reported that Amendola suffered a high ankle sprain and could miss a few weeks.  The team, however, wants to make sure he is ready for the playoffs.

Without Amendola, the Patriots are limited at the wide receiver position.  They will only have Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell at wide receiver.  It is highly likely that the team will either promote a receiver from the practice squad or sign a veteran free agent.

Amendola wasn’t vital in the offense, but he will be missed.  Out of his 23 receptions this season, 14 have come on third down.  He has also recorded four touchdowns and have been a key contributor in the return game.  He has fielded 18 punt returns for 121 yards to go along with five kick returns for 129 yards.

Who fills in for Danny Amendola?

With Amendola out a few weeks, rookie wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell will continue to see his targets increase.  Chris Hogan could also be used in situations where Amendola contributed.  Tom Brady and the Patriots can also make up for their lack of depth at the receiver position by utilizing their pass catching running backs.  Dion Lewis, James White and rookie D.J. Foster can all catch passes out of the backfield.

Some other possibilities include bringing back Keshawn Martin.  Martin can play both the slot positon and return kicks.  He has experience in the Patriots’ offense.  Other former receivers they could bring back include Aaron Dobson or Kenbrell Thompkins.  Both would know the offense and could at least fit in until Amendola returns.

Another option, could be to bring back Wes Welker.  As crazy as that idea may seem, it would also be quite the story if he was to come back and help Welker in any way.  Last season with the Rams he caught 13 passes for 102 yards in eight games.
