Boston Red Sox: Eduardo Rodríguez Latest Knee Injury Has Disaster Written All Over It

This is why the Red Sox can’t make trades to get rid of their depth. You trade away Clay Buchholz for Marco Hernandez 2.0 to make the starting rotation less crowded. Now, you have who everyone thought your 4th starter in Eduardo Rodríguez hurting the same knee as he did in spring training last year. Yes they say it’s not serious but they said the same thing last year

As we all remember, Eduardo Rodríguez hurt his knee last spring training and the initial reports was that he was only going to be out a few weeks. He didn’t make his 1st start against major league hitters until May 31st down in Baltimore. Now he hurts the same knee and he’s going to be playing in the World Baseball Classic (WBC).

Per @nickcafardo, Eduardo Rodriguez tweaked his right knee in winter ball but it doesn’t appear serious. Same knee he hurt in ST.

More from Boston Red Sox

He’s going to be away from the team, he’s hurt and we all know this injury will last until about July. He wouldn’t be playing winter ball if he wasn’t going to be playing in the WBC. This is why I hate the WBC. Major league teams have their players playing for teams away from their organizations and you’re risking injury when they’re not playing for their organization.

What makes this injury even worse is you no longer have Clay Buchholz as depth for the rotation. You can’t expect anything out of Eduardo Rodríguez in my opinion at this point. The slightest injury screws him up and he’s on the DL or making an absurd amount of rehab starts in Pawtucket.

That Buchholz trade reminds me of the Bronson Arroyo trade in spring training 2006. They traded the starting pitching depth to make room in the starting rotation. That summer, they were piecing together the rotation using AAA players that should not be playing in Major League Baseball.

I don’t see that happening this year especially since they have 3 of the best pitchers in the game in that starting rotation. But a few guys in that rotation will get hurt and they will need to piece together games with guys that shouldn’t be pitching at the major league level.
