New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is reportedly a head coach candidate for the San Diego Chargers.

Forget offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is emerging as a top head coach candidate for a few teams.

On the top of that list are two teams from California.  According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the San Diego Chargers are interested in Patricia and have requested permission to interview the Patriots defensive coordinator.  The Chargers’ interest came on the same day reports surfaced that the Los Angeles Rams have shown interest.

More from New England Patriots

Patricia, who interviewed with the Cleveland Browns a year ago, has seen his stock rise due to the job he has done with the Patriots’ defense this season.  Despite the reports, Patricia remains focused on his job with the Patriots and said as much on a conference call earlier on Monday.

"“I haven’t heard anything,” Patricia said via WEEI. “We’re just kind of working on yesterday’s game and kind of getting ready for moving forward. I know there is a process in place with that that the league follows, but for myself right now, I am focused on what we’re doing right now and the team and moving forward. I’m in a normal Monday routine, which is great for me.”"

Patricia impressed the Browns in his interview last season and could’ve been the head coach if he didn’t decide to return to the New England Patriots.  This year, however, he appears to be ready and willing to jump on an opportunity to move on from New England.

"“I think that process last year is a great process to go through as a young coach and something that was extremely new to me in learning about a lot of different organizations in the league, how they work and how they are structured and kind of the football in’s and out’s from a different side,” Patricia said. “You see — maybe you don’t study, you don’t look at — but there is a whole another aspect to the organization and how everything is run.”"
