Cassidy Led Boston Bruins Improve to 4-0 With Win Over Sharks
The Boston Bruins improved to 4-0 under new head coach Bruce Cassidy with a 2-1 overtime win on the road against the San Jose Sharks.
On NBCSN’s “Hockey Night in America” the Boston Bruins scrapped for a 2-1 overtime win over the San Jose Sharks. For the first time this season, the Bruins have a four-game winning streak, all four coming under interim head coach Bruce Cassidy. This was the first game of a four-game road trip following Boston’s bye week. The trip includes the California sweep of the Sharks, Ducks and Kings.
With the win the Bruins improved to 30-23-6, moving back into a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Ryan Spooner got the B’s on the board in the first period with a goal, with an assist from Jimmy Hayes. It was Hayes’ 100th career NHL point.
The game got intense in the second period, and each team had plenty of chances. David Krejci and David Pastrnak were both unable to finish on opportune chances.
The San Jose Sharks drew even late in the period on a goal from Patrick Marleau.
The third period was scoreless as each team was unable to capitalize. Goaltenders Tuukka Rask and Martin Jones were phenomenal all night. Rask ended the night with 29 saves, Jones had 26. Of note, Rask has made 79 of 81 saves over his last three games.
The 3-on-3 overtime winner came off the stick of Brad Marchand. On a set play, Patrice Bergeron won the defensive zone faceoff and sent the puck back to Torey Krug. At the same time, Marchand went storming up the center of the ice. Krug sent the puck off the boards and right to Marchand, who beat Martin Jones five hole for the win.
With his 25th goal of the season, Marchy is tied for fifth place on the scoring list with Evgeni Malkin and Tyler Seguin.
Patrice Bergeron earned his 400th career assist on the Marchand winner.
Marchand talked about his OT winner and the importance of a road win following the bye week post game in the locker room.
The Bruins will aim to continue the momentum they’ve built up under their interim head coach. The team seems energized, playing with more hustle and passion than they have all season long.
The Bruins will continue their west coast swing on Wednesday in Anaheim as they face the Ducks.
