If wide receiver Michael Floyd wants to return to the New England Patriots he will have to do it by accepting a “budget deal.”

In fact, if Michael Floyd wants to play in the NFL at all next season, he will have to take less money and prove himself to build his value back up amongst NFL teams.  The New England Patriots claimed Floyd off waivers towards the end of the 2016 season after he was released by the Arizona Cardinals following a DUI arrest.

Floyd, who is now a free agent, is currently serving a 120-day jail sentence as a result of the arrest and still has yet to receive punishment from the NFL.

Yet, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, the Patriots are interested in bringing Floyd back for the 2017 season.  But, the team will only bring him back with a “budget deal.”

While Floyd has expressed interest in re-signing with the Super Bowl champions, the team doesn’t exactly need Floyd.  With Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell and Danny Amendola in the mix, Floyd would just add depth to the receiving group.

The Patriots will also have a healthy Rob Gronkowski returning so the team will not have to overextend for a player who may not be available the first few weeks of the season.  For those reasons, along with a lack of interest that may come Floyd’s way from other teams and the Patriots should appear to have the upper hand if the two sides want to get a deal done.

In just three games played with the Patriots, Floyd caught five passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.  Although he did look good in one of those three games, he looked just as lost in the Divisional Round playoff game against the Houston Texans.

His lack of performance in that game was a reason he was inactive for the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl LI.
