LeGarrette Blount had a career-best year for the New England Patriots in 2016, but the team expects to lose him when the free agency period begins Thursday.

Mike Garafolo from the NFL Network said there is an “expectation” that running back LeGarrette Blount will not return to the New England Patriots in 2017.

Blount will become an unrestricted free agent on Thursday when the new NFL league year begins.

In 2016, Blount was a force for the New England Patriots offense. He ran for a career-high 1,161 yards while adding 18 touchdowns for a franchise record. Sources indicate that Blount could sign in Detroit, as the Lions are in desperate need of a powerful running back.

The Patriots still have speed and pass catching backs

Dion Lewis and James White on the roster, along with Brandon Bolden. The team could then draft a new power back, or explore veteran free agents. Available running backs include Adrian Peterson, Jamal Charles, Eddie Lacy and Latavius Murray.

Peterson has claimed he is willing to take a pay cut to play in New England. The veteran is nearing the end of his career and is looking to add a Super Bowl appearance and win to his resume.

Of that veteran group, Latavius Murray intrigues me the most. He’s been a solid back for a few seasons, and the Patriots do not need the issues that come with Peterson (domestic abuse), Charles (injuries), or Lacy (weight). In 2016, Murray averaged 4.0 yards per carry on 195 attempts. He also muscled in 12 touchdowns.

The NFL league year begins Thursday, and the Patriots will be active in both retaining their own players, and searching for others. The running back position will become a top priority if Blount leaves, but there are certainly plenty of options to help fill the void.
