NFL free agency is certainly off to a blazing start, and the way some moves are lining up means New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo should be gone soon.

Immediately following the Cleveland Browns trade to acquire Brock Osweiler from the Houston Texans, it would have been thought that they were secure at the QB spot. Now, it’s believed that the Browns made the move to acquire the included second round pick, as they’ll trade or cut Osweiler and pursue New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo.

The cost of quarterbacks this season has gone up, as somehow Mike Glennon was worth $45 million to the Bears. This should help the Patriots drive up the price for Garoppolo.

Cleveland is currently shopping Osweiler and is looking for a 2018 third round pick in exchange. It’s entirely possible that the Browns are simply attempting to load up on picks, to blow the Patriots away with an unbelievable offer.

More from New England Patriots

As of now, the Browns have two 1st rounders, two 2nd rounders, one 2nd round pick, two 4th round picks, three 5th round picks and one 6th rounder in the 2017 NFL Draft. In 2018, they have a 1st, three 2nd, a 3rd, two 4th, a 5th, two 6th and a 7th. Cleveland is simply loaded with picks and is looking to add more with an Osweiler trade.

It’s been documented that the Browns are willing to give up the 12th overall pick in this years draft, but the Patriots want more.

New England’s asking price seems to be the Browns #1 overall pick this year, a 1st round pick in 2018, and a 3rd round pick this year.

The Browns will clearly need to give up a lot to get Garoppolo, but they have the picks to make the move.

For what it’s worth ESPN’s Adam Schefter remains confident that New England will not trade Jimmy Garoppolo. I for one hope he is completely wrong. If the Patriots can get that #1 overall pick, it is certainly worth it.

The Patriots could then use their own picks to potentially trade for the Saints’ Brandin Cooks or to select pass-rusher Myles Garrett. Both moves would again help the Patriots, making them even heavier Super Bowl favorites.
