New England Patriots tight end Dwayne Allen is ready to get started with his new team and show just why he is a Bill Belichick kinda guy.

When it comes to versatility and doing whatever it takes to win, Dwayne Allen knows he is on the right team.  When the New England Patriots acquired the tight end in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts to start the new league season, head coach Bill Belichick knew exactly the kind of player he was getting.

Back in 2015, Belichick spoke highly of tight end following a matchup between the Patriots and Colts. He praised his effectiveness in both the run and pass game.

More from New England Patriots

"“This guy is a big, physical, strong guy,” Belichick said, via the Providence Journal.  “You can see in yesterday’s game where he also has the ability to post up against tougher situations like in the red area and be able to box out and catch touchdowns and situational plays.”"

That wasn’t the first time Belichick praised Allen as “an extremely good player.”  So the fact the Patriots head coach jumped on the opportunity to acquire him is not a shock.  Especially considering the fact he had to trade with a bitter rival to get him.

Replacing Martellus Bennett

With Rob Gronkowski returning, Dwayne Allen should serve as a good complimentary tight end.  He is not as talented as Martellus Bennett and may not have the same type of production in the offense, but he will not be expected to.  In ways, particularly blocking and in the red zone, he might even be more effective than the former Patriots tight end.

Following a down year statistics wise with the Colts, Allen is excited about his new opportunity.  He is also excited about the chance to show Belichick that he is indeed the type of player he values.

"“One thing that I’ve caught onto early is coach Belichick saying, ‘The more you can do,’” Allen said in a conference call following the trade, via the Boston Herald.  “I’m just about winning.  I want to win.  I understand the more skills I can provide the offense, hopefully the more mismatches can be created for myself and other players.  That’s what I’m about.  I’m excited to be utilized as a football player again and not be confined to any box, but just be a football player, tight end.”"
