Boston Red Sox: Marco Hernandez Should Make the Opening Day Roster
Utility infielder Marco Hernandez leads all Boston Red Sox players in spring training hits as he battles for an Opening Day roster spot.
Boston Red Sox infielder Marco Hernandez has been on fire this spring, and he’s making his case for a roster spot.
Hernandez has 19 hits on a .422 average this spring with 12 runs, 6 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.
He even has a steal of home and is crushing triples this spring each and every day.
The Red Sox will have to make an important decision on whether or not Hernandez makes the Opening Day roster, but he definitely should. Josh Rutledge is his biggest competition as he must remain on the 25-man roster all season in order to stay with the Sox. Hernandez still has minor league options.

The Red Sox should let Rutledge go and bring the 24-year-old Hernandez up to the majors.
The 6’0″ second baseman adds depth behind the aging Dustin Pedroia. Brock Holt can fill in at shortstop, first base or third base as a utility outfielder, but Hernandez should get the nod when Pedey needs a day off. He can also shortstop or third base if needed.
Last season, Hernandez got 51 at bats in 40 games with Boston. He had 15 hits while hitting .294. He also stole a base during his tenure with the club. His speed is underrated and he would be a tremendous asset as a pinch runner.
The Red Sox should strongly consider giving the 25th roster spot to Marco Hernandez, as he adds versatility and has proven it is his time to shine in the major leagues.
