The Boston Red Sox opened the 2017 season with a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday at Fenway Park.

Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello was fantastic for the Boston Red Sox on Opening Day. He battled until the Sox were able to bust things open with a five-run fifth inning.

All of Boston’s five runs came with two outs on the board.

Pregame Ceremonies

The visiting Pittsburgh Pirates were introduced first ahead of the season opening game.

Chris sale earned the loudest standing of any Red Sox player for the team’s introductions on Monday. Sale will pitch for the first time in a Boston uniform on Wednesday.

The U.S. Air Force conducted a perfectly timed flyover of Fenway Park.

A few Super Bowl winning Patriots, Rob Gronkowski, Tom Brady, James White and Dion Lewis, joined Patriots owner Robert Kraft in parading the team’s five Lombardi trophies.

When Tom Brady held up his now famous Super Bowl LI jersey for the fans, Gronk acted as only Gronk would. He stole the jersey and shenanigans followed, including a light Brady tackle.

Finally, it was time for baseball as Rick Porcello delivered the first pitch of the season.

Things were scoreless for Boston and Pittsburgh through four innings.

Jackie Bradley Jr. made the first great Red Sox catch of the season on this ball hit by Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli.

Pirates starter Gerrit Cole was rolling with two outs in the fifth inning before the wheels fell off for him.

Following a JBJ triple, third baseman Pablo Sandoval legged out an infield single to make it 1-0 Boston.

Later in the same inning, rookie sensation Andrew Benintendi hit his first home run of the season, a 3-run shot that put the Red Sox up 5-0.
