Boston Red Sox: Drew Pomeranz Simply Special in 2017 Debut
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz delivered a beauty in the team’s 8-1 win over their American League East Rivals.
In his first start of the season, Boston Red Sox left-handed starter Drew Pomeranz had no problem shutting down the AL East leading Baltimore Orioles in an 8-1 rout at Fenway Park Tuesday night.
It was the kind of performance that was unexpected from the lefty, but a performance the Red Sox could learn to get accustomed to as the season progresses.
With Rick Porcello, Chris Sale and eventually David Price anchoring the starting rotation, Pomeranz showed why he could be the team’s fourth best starter. In six-plus innings he gave up just four hits, one run and struck out six Orioles batters in his first career Fenway Park victory.
In his first action since coming off the 10-day disabled list, Drew Pomeranz said after the game that he felt good and the 95-mph fast ball he threw by Baltimore slugger Mark Trumbo showcased how strong he felt.
"“I was feeling really good today,” Pomeranz said, via MLB.com. “Figured out some things mechanically, timing wise, things I’ve been searching for all spring and it finally all come together.”"
It was just one game and one start, but showed Pomeranz does have what it takes to pitch in the American League.
A trade finally paying off?
The trade the Boston Red Sox made to acquire Drew Pomeranz for top pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza wasn’t made without scrutiny.

Considering the left-handed pitcher’s injury issues and lack of consistency down the stretch last season, second guessing the trade was much supported.
But, if Pomeranz can deliver similar pitching performances like he did Tuesday night at Fenway, he may just silence his critics and make Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski look like a genius (eventually anyway).
"“Very powerful,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Pomeranz’s outing. “Tonight was maybe a little bit more power than anticipated. The action to his curveball was sharp and tight. He did a great job in the second inning when they get second and third with just one out. But just the overall power was very encouraging to see tonight from Drew.”"
The victory pulled the Boston Red Sox back above the .500 mark at 4-3.
