Boston Red Sox starter Rick Porcello seems to be getting back to the pitcher he was during the 2016 regular season.

The run support hasn’t been there for Rick Porcello.  The Boston Red Sox starter allowed just two runs on five hits over six strong innings in a 5-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

The loss dropped Porcello to 1-4 on the season.  But, the good news for Red Sox fans is that the reigning American League Cy Young winner looks like he is getting to form.

On Monday night, Porcello had to be on his game as once again the Red Sox bats struggled to score.  In fact, the offense could barely get a hit.  The team only had two hits going into the eighth inning before they finally managed to put two runs on the board.

On top of the offensive woes, the Red Sox played sloppy defense which didn’t help Porcello’s cause in the defeat.  But, like Chris Sale, the right-handed pitcher is putting the team first instead of worrying about his personal statistics.

More from Boston Red Sox

"“It’s not about me, it’s not about my personal record, it’s about the team,” Porcello said following the game, via WEEI.  “That’s where the frustration lies.  You’ve got to keep playing.  It’s a tough game, you go through ups and downs obviously, we’ve got to do things better on all sides of the ball, keep batting and we’ll come through.”"

In a tale of two seasons, Rick Porcello’s four losses already equals the total amount of losses he had all season.

In defense of Mookie Betts

Rick Porcello also displayed some leadership following the 5-2 loss to the Orioles.

In the sixth inning of Monday night’s game, Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts was hit by a pitch by Baltimore starter Dylan Bundy.  While the situation didn’t result in more dramatics, it sparked tensions between the two teams.

When asked about the situation following the game, Porcello didn’t respond directly.  Instead, he made a fiery comment that will hopefully spark the team.

"“I have no comment on that,” Porcello told reporters.  “I can’t tell you what they’re thinking or what they’re trying to do there.  What was the count, 2-1?  Who knows?  I don’t know.  Thankfully Mookie’s all right, we’ll go out there and kick their ass tomorrow.”"

Bundy claimed hitting Betts was unintentional.  Following the drama that went on between the two teams over a week ago, who really knows.  The fact that it was Mookie Betts, a player who has taken Orioles’ pitchers deep many times, it might not be coincidental.

In any event, the Red Sox need to right back with their offensive and defensive efforts.
