Boston Red Sox vs Texas Rangers: 3-game series prediction
By Riley Culler
GAME 3: May 25th – Thursday: Rangers @ Red Sox 7:10 PM (EST)
Probable Pitchers:
- Boston – (L) Drew Pomeranz (3-3) (4.97 ERA) (1.47 WHIP) (38 IP) (45 SO)
- Texas – (R) Nick Martinez (1-2) (4.33 ERA) (1.25 WHIP) (35.1 IP) (19 SO)
Drew Pomeranz has been very inconsistent for Boston early this season. With a 4.97 ERA, it’s very surprising Pomeranz is 3-3, but despite a poor start to the season Pomeranz has settled down. Allowing only 3 earned runs in his last two starts.
Last time Pomeranz was on the mound he only pitched 4 innings, which led to a dispute with Red Sox manager John Farrell. They exchanged heated words in the dugout but the two claim it was more of a back and forth than an argument. Here’s what Farrell had to say about the dispute.

"“He didn’t want to come out of the game, so that was a discussion we had. And it’s been settled. You have to find a way to get more efficient, bottom line. The game of pitching is trying to get a little deeper. He’s out there competing, trying to do that, and yet a lot of deep counts, a lot of high pitch counts. And when you’re looking at 25 pitches an inning, after an outing where there was some physical issues, felt like that was the end of the day today.”"
Martinez is also pitching well recently despite his high ERA, he’s only allowed 4 earned runs in the last 2 starts. Expect a lot of balls in play for Boston in this series closer. Martinez has only struck out 19 batters in 35.1 innings pitched.
Prediction: Win
Pomeranz has been inconsistent and I think he struggles a bit in this outing. Not enough so to cost Boston the win, and they should provide great run support against Nick Martinez. Not only because of his high ERA, but struggling to strikeout batters may give Boston’s offense a boost. After going 5-7 in their last 12, I predict the Red Sox get back on track and sweep the Rangers.
