Boston Red Sox pitcher David Price will make his long-awaited 2017 season debut on Monday night against the Chicago White Sox.

The Boston Red Sox will get David Price back on Monday when he returns from his elbow injury.

Price has made two starts with the Pawtucket Red Sox and though they didn’t go as planned, the team will call him up to make his first MLB start of 2017.

In Price’s last rehab start on Wednesday night he threw 3.2 innings and allowed 6 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits. He was able to strikout 4 batters ad walked just one. He threw a whopping 89 pitches to not even get through 4 innings of work.

Maybe the Red Sox think David Price will flip a switch at the major league level, but it really didn’t seem like he was ready to return to Boston. His velocity was there, but Price struggled with his command, which is usually his strong suit.

More from Boston Red Sox

Price’s debut will come against the Chicago White Sox. They’re not an exceptional team, so if Price truly is healthy there should be no ridiculous struggles. That said, I’m sure it will be a challenge for him to find his rhythm at first. I expect Price to give up some hits and a few runs, but if he gets absolutely blown up, then we can question Dave Dombrowski once again.

Boston is looking to solidify their rotation, as they’ve shuffled the 5th rotation spot more times than not. As a whole the Red Sox are 18th in the majors in starters’ ERA (4.47). That’s with Chris Sale, who has become the ace and been nothing but dominant. Imagine where they’d rank without him.

By late-June Red Sox fans should be witnessing the 1-2 punch they imagined in full swing. If Price can get on track here, having Chris Sale behind him should trerrify opposing teams.

I believe Price got the call up too early, but maybe he can prove me wrong. I want the Red Sox and Price to succeed, so I will gladly eat my words if he comes out and shutsdown the Chicago White Sox.
