Boston Red Sox send Dustin Pedroia to DL, activate Pablo Sandoval
The Boston Red Sox have placed Dustin Pedroia on the disabled list and have activated Pablo Sandoval, who will be on the Red Sox bench tonight.
Chris Sale is making his return to Chicago as the Boston Red Sox take on the White Sox tonight, but the team’s big news is the placement of Dustin Pedroia on the 10-day DL.
The second baseman was injured after a first base collision yesterday with Julio Abreu. Pedroia is expected to miss about two weeks with a severe left wrist sprain.
Thankfully it is just a sprain, as manager John Farrell made clear.
"“That’s a sprain. There’s no fractures, no structural damage, ligament or otherwise.”"
Meanwhile, Boston called up third baseman Pablo Sandoval after a rehab stint in Pawtucket. He last played for the Red Sox on April 23, when he sprained his right knee. He was having a solid start to the season until that point.
In Pawtucket, Sandoval went 4-25 with three doubles. Farrell has said that Sandoval is still in the middle of regaining his timing. The injury to Pedroia may have expedited this call up.

Boston would likely prefer to have Deven Marrero move to second base with Sandoval at third. For tonight though, that won’t be the case. Here is the lineup for the Red Sox on Tuesday night.
- Mookie Betts, RF
- Josh Rutledge, 2B
- Xander Bogaerts, SS
- Hanley Ramirez, DH
- Chris Young, LF
- Sam Travis, 1B
- Sandy Leon, C
- Jackie Bradley Jr.,
- CF Deven Marrero, 3B
Pablo Sandoval will begin the night on the bench, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes in during the later innings to get back into the swing of things. He may get a pinch hit opportunity if it presents itself, or he may simply come in for some work at 3B.

Boston is aiming to continue their hot streak, as they’ve won 6 of their last 8 games. They’ve dropped their last two however.
